Alcântara Space Center

A few kilometers from our coastal areas in Alcântara, we also worked with the agrovillages, quilombola areas within the Legal Amazon biome.

How These Communities got together

In 1982, the construction of the Alcântara Launch Center forced the displacement of 312 quilombola families from their ancestral lands. After nearly three centuries of living, farming, and walking those lands, the local residents were "relocated" without prior notice to seven agrovillages far from the city.

This loss of traditional space resulted in food insecurity and significant social and environmental impacts.

Unfortunately, today, several quilombola communities face constant pressure from deforestation, which endangers ecosystems and the livelihoods of thousands.

We started our project in the agrovillages, in transition areas with the Amazon Legal, in 2022. Through a socioeconomic selection process, we hired local people to plant native species and work in our nursery.
